Cherbourg Council is offering rent relief to residents as support during the COVID-19 lockdown.

At the first full Council meeting held after the election, councillors voted unanimously that residents would not have to pay rent to Council in May.

This will cost Cherbourg Council – which receives rent rather than rates from residents – an estimated $140,000.

Mayor Elvie Sandow said she and her fellow Councillors agreed they wanted to help community in any way possible during these tough times.

She said strengthening council’s commitment to the well-being of residents was more important than ever.

The rent-free May will be a “one-off”.

Residents can still choose to pay rent during May to gain a credit on their account.

Mayor Sandow said she wanted people to know that community comes first and always will.
