An elderly Wondai couple has died after a single-vehicle crash on the Bunya Highway near Ficks Crossing on Sunday afternoon.

Emergency services were called at 11:58am.

A police spokesperson said the couple’s car left the highway and crashed into a tree.

The driver, an 81-year-old man, and the passenger, a 76-year-old woman, were treated at the scene by QAS paramedics but were pronounced deceased a short time later.

The highway was blocked – with diversions in place – while emergency services were at the incident.

It was fully re-opened just before 5:00pm.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have dashcam footage of a white Toyota Aurion sedan (Qld registration 084-WNW) travelling along the Bunya Highway to contact police.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

There have now been three deaths on South Burnett roads in less than a week.

  1. May I pass on my deepest sympathy to the family of these two beautiful people who lost their lives in this tragic accident. They were always seen together and now, will still be together. RIP

  2. So sad. Both were long time volunteers at the Visitor Information Centre/Timber Museum in Wondai. I have many wonderful memories of working with them. My condolences to the family.
