Two members of Topology will be visiting the South Burnett on Monday, February 24, to teach composition and percussion to students at Moffatdale, Windera and Cloyna State schools.

They’ll be joined by Blackbutt musician Matthew Wild, who’ll conduct workshops on playing the ukulele.

In all, the three musicians will teach a combined 80 students from the three schools on the day.

And they’ll be travelling almost 50km between the three schools to cram the entire program into a single day’s visit.

The musicians are coming to the region as part of Top Up, a community engagement and education program Topology have run in schools around the State since 1998.

Topology was established in Brisbane 23 years ago by five musicians determined to create original works.

In the years since then they have released 14 albums; worked on collaborative projects with artists as diverse as Kate Miller-Heidke and the Kransky Sisters, the Queensland Theatre Company and Expressions Dance Company; and performed at major festivals across Australia and around the world.

The group were also voted State Award Winners for Excellence in Music Education at the Art Music Awards in 2015 for their Top Up program, which reaches thousands of students every year.

Topology founder John Babbage will be one of the teachers at the South Burnett schools on Monday.

John said the primary goal of Top Up was to build the creative capacity of the students, and he looked forward to bringing the program to them.

“It’s well documented that arts and creative pursuits broaden the mind and assist with individual and community well-being,” he said.
