The Wondai Community Kindergarten building closed its doors for the final time on Tuesday afternoon, marking the end of an era for local families.

Educator Teena Gibbs admitted the decision was “quite upsetting” but said there was no other choice.

For the past year, a playgroup has been operating out of the building in Baynes Street to judge whether there was sufficient support to have the community kindy re-open.

“But there was no interest,” Teena told southburnett.com.au

At the time of the closure there were six families and one daycare mum using the facility.

Teena and a friend spent Tuesday cleaning the building and putting things away, ready to hand the keys back to the The Gowrie not-for-profit association which has been running the kindy since 2013.

“I have no idea what’s going to happen to the building,” Teena said.

“I am so sad that no more children will get the best start to their education through a community kindergarten.

“I have loved my 4 1/2 years at Wondai Kindergarten and I will cherish all my memories forever.

“A big thank you to all children, parents, carers, friends and teachers and, of course, Lady Gowrie for letting me be part of the team and for caring, teaching, guiding and loving your children.”
