125cc winner Tate Zischke, from Grandchester, with 250cc winner Flynn Nicol, from Brisbane, and their Golden Steel Shoe trophies

Fifteen of Australia’s best young speedway riders put their talents to the test at the fourth annual John Titman Golden Steel Shoe Challenge in Kingaroy at the weekend.

The challenge, for 125cc and 250cc riders, was held across a series of heats and then finals at the Junior Bees’ Kingaroy Speedway track on Saturday.

Former international speedway rider John Titman was on hand to watch the young riders in action and present the “steel shoe” trophies.

Kingaroy Junior Motorcycle Speedway secretary Tracey Tunstall said the club had several more exciting events coming up.

There will be a “come and try” day for new riders on July 21 followed by a club racing day on August 17.

But the big event will be the State Titles on September 14-15.

The 125cc Solo title will be decided on the Saturday morning, followed by the 125cc Pairs in the afternoon.

On the Sunday morning, the 250cc Solo title will be raced.

It will be a big weekend for motorcycle sport in Kingaroy as this is the same weekend that the South Burnett Junior Motorcycle Club will be hosting a round of the South-East Queensland Junior MX series at its track near Kingaroy Airport.

Footnote: Why “steel shoe”? Watch a speedway motorbike cornering and see where the rider’s foot is … that’s why they wear a metal “slipper” on their left boot.
