South Burnett residents were among hundreds of people on social media who reported a fireball which lit up the night sky just after 10:00pm on Saturday.
The bright ball of light, followed by a short tail, streaked towards the ground and then disappeared.
The exploding meteor – or bolide – was reported from central Queensland to northern NSW.
It was caught on dashcam videos about 10:01pm.
The flash lit up the sky before quickly burning out.
Some people also reported an accompanying sonic boom which shook their houses.
The South East Queensland Astronomical Society said members observed three meteors from a site at Bracken Ridge on Saturday night.
This confirms other reports from the South Burnett of an earlier meteor spotted about 8:00pm.
