Goomeri P-10 State School just pipped Crawford State School at the South Burnett One-Day Interschool equestrian competition held in Nanango last week.

The “South Burnett ODI”, organised by St Mary’s Catholic College, combined the best features of the former South Burnett Schools Equestrian Challenge and Cow Horse competitions.

A total of 85 riders from 17 schools competed in seven categories: Team Penning, Working Cowhorse, Barrel Race, Diamond Flag, Bending Race, Best All-Round Mount and Rider Class.

Event organiser John Dalton said Goomeri P-10 won by the narrowest of margins.

Goomeri P-10 has dominated the previous competitions, but Mr Dalton said the Crawford riders seriously challenged Goomeri this year for the aggregate shield.

“Officials had to look at second and third decimal places to determine the 2019 winner,” he said.

Mr Dalton said the riders, their parents and schools had once again showed their commitment to horse competitions involving cattle.

“At one stage at the start of the year, we thought the event may have to be cancelled due to dry weather affecting the availability of cattle,” he said.

“However, the rain some weeks ago, and also the generous offer of suitable cattle from three parents ensured the event was held as planned.”

Mr Dalton paid thanks to Kent Perrett and family for the cattle and to Nanango State High School for allowing their “Groundforce” crew to assist with setting up of the grounds.

He also wanted to especially thank the judges, including Phil Matthews and South Burnett Deputy Mayor Kathy Duff  who have judged at St Mary’s equestrian events for seven years.
