The 2019 Darling Downs AFL competition got off to a damp start in Kingaroy on Saturday with the South Burnett Saints facing up to their old rivals, the Goondiwindi Hawks, in a match that had been tipped as the Game of the Round.

However, the Hawks led at every change in wet and slippery conditions at Lyle Vidler Oval.

Veteran Saints’ player Adam Bowater landed three goals with Matthew Patroni, Brenton Noe and Jarryd Hill (two goals) also putting in good performances in tough conditions.

The final score was Goondiwindi 20.12-132 to Saints 6.6-42.

The Saints’ best quarter came after half-time when they landed three goals but they fell off in the last, allowing Goondiwindi to scoot away.

The Saints’ next game will be against the Highfields Lions at Highfields next Saturday.
