An abseiler has died in an accident on Saturday near the Point Pure Lookout in the Brooyar State Forest, north-east of Widgee.

Emergency services were called to the incident just before 12:30pm.

The abseiler was reportedly making their way down the side of the cliff when they became stuck several metres from the ground.

Ambulance paramedics and QFES attended the scene.

The bluffs at Point Pure and nearby Eagles Nest are popular spots for abseiling.

UPDATE, March 3: On Sunday, police said the abseiler was a Gold Coast man, 64.

No further details will be released until next of kin have been informed.
