Tenders closed this week for construction of Gympie Regional Council’s proposed $2 million equestrian centre at Kilkivan.

The development includes an undercover area (with either an 80m x 40m or 80m x 35m arena) plus a covered spectator area.

Tenders also had to cover fencing, power, lighting and sound as well as an access road to the arena site and an irrigation system for the arena itself.

Gympie Regional Council allocated $900,000 in its 2018 Budget towards construction of the facility.

The rest of the funding for the project, which will be constructed at Kilkivan Showgrounds, is being provided by the State Government through its Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program.

The centre will be designed to host campdrafts, cutting events and barrel races although Gympie Council believes it will also be used for other activities, including concerts.

Construction is expected to start early next year.

The aim is to have the project ready for its official opening at the 2019 Kilkivan Great Horse Ride on September 6-8.
