The South Burnett mother who used her body to shield her baby from dangerous hail on Thursday will be recommended for a bravery award.

Fiona Simpson, her daughter Clara, four months, and her 78-year-old grandmother were driving along the D’Aguilar Highway towards Kingaroy when the storm struck near Coolabunia.

The trio parked by the side of the road but hail stones began smashing the windows of their car.

Fiona climbed into the back seat to protect her baby.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk told reporters on Sunday she would recommend Fiona – who ended up battered and bruised in Kingaroy Hospital – for a bravery award.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has also praised Fiona’s courage.
