Kingaroy’s favourite son, Matthew Hayden, says he “dodged a bullet” after suffering neck injuries while surfing at Stradbroke Island on Friday.

The former Test cricketer posted selfies on Instagram at the weekend showing him battered and bruised.

“Fractured C6, torn C5, C4 ligaments safe to say I truly have dodged a bullet. Thank you everyone ❤️,” he wrote.

Hayden, 46, was surfing with his son Josh when he crashed head-first into a sand bank.

MRI and CT scans confirmed the spinal injuries.

Hayden wrote that he was “on the road to recovery”.

“Last attention seeking post I promise. Just wanted to say a big thank you to all our mates on Straddie who have been so supportive. Especially Ben & Sue Kelley for the fast diagnosis,” he wrote.
