Inspector Mark Long,
from Kingaroy

August 20, 2018

Sixteen of the weekend fires in the South Burnett are suspected to have been deliberately lit.

Kingaroy Area Commander Mark Long told southburnett.com.au the fire at East Nanango on Saturday morning, near Bullcamp Road and Mount Stanley Road, had two seats of fire on the side of the road.

On Saturday night, four fires were lit along the Chinchilla-Wondai Road, including near the intersections with J Hunters Road, Melrose Road and Kingaroy-Burrandowan Road.

On Sunday night, five fires were lit on the side of the D’Aguilar Highway within 30 minutes, including multiple fires in the Blackbutt area.

Also on Sunday night, five known fires were lit between Binjour and Goomeri along the Burnett Highway.

However, the recent Charlestown fire and the Curtis Road / Schellbachs Road fire at Booie were both started accidentally.

Inspector Long called for local residents and motorists to be vigilant and report any fires or suspicious behaviour immediately to Triple 0 (000).

On Sunday, Kingaroy police announced they had charged a man in relation to nine fires recently lit on Kingaroy’s Oasis Estate.
