Cr Ros Heit

South Burnett councillor Ros Heit has urged any residents concerned about proposed cuts to Council support for community groups to speak out.

She said there was a perception in the community the proposal to begin charging a fee to community groups for water, sewerage and garbage collection was “done and dusted”.

South Burnett Mayor Keith Campbell floated the idea last week as a way to raise some of the $10 million needed to be spent on the region’s unsealed roads.

Under the plan, community groups would be charged a portion of the cost of delivering water, sewerage and garbage collection.

They would pay 12.5 per cent of the cost in the 2018-19 Council Budget, increasing to 25 per cent in 2019-20.

Representatives from a number of community groups have already expressed alarm about the proposal.

Cr Heit said some people believed the decision had already been made, but this was not the case.

She urged residents to speak to councillors – and not just their local councillor – if they had any concerns.

The measures will be voted on at Council’s Budget meeting on June 25.
