Cherbourg firefighters narrowly escaped injury when called to a car fire on Sunday night.

A small sedan, believed to have been stolen from Hervey Bay, was apparently set alight by the thieves in Carter Street, Cherbourg, at the rear of the football grounds.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 8:00pm.

Cherbourg Fire Station Captain Cameron Bond said that as the firefighters were working to extinguish the flames, one of the gas struts on the hatchback exploded out of the rear of the car, landing only metres away from the fire truck.

The vehicle was gutted by the blaze.
