The South Burnett’s new combined soccer team, South Burnett United, has begun with a flying start in the Toowoomba Football League’s Championship competition.

The team travelled to Toowoomba on Sunday to take on last year’s grand finalists, USQ Championship Men, at Toara Park.

After defeating the Chinchilla Bears easily in a pre-season game last week, United were cautiously confident of doing well, but in the end they need not have worried.

The full-time score in Toowoomba was SB United 9, USQ 1.

The creation of the United team – and local players in the National Premier League – has led to some changes in the South Burnett soccer competition.

This year there will be only one grade contested, scrapping the long-standing Division 1 and Division 2 men’s categories.

The women’s competition will continue as usual.

South Burnett United will also host their home games from the TFL in conjunction with local rounds which means South Burnett football fans will be seeing some new faces competing locally.

South Burnett Football secretary Sarah Vanderkolk said anyone – men or women – interested in playing football this year in the South Burnett should contact her on 0429-686-001.

The local competition will kick off on March 17.

The South Burnett junior competition will begin on April 21 in Nanango.
