Almost 20 South Burnett intermediate and advanced string players and percussionists spent last weekend at Kingaroy’s Uniting Church Hall refining their technique.

They were taking part in a series of “Bows and Beats” music workshops organised by the South Burnett Community Orchestra.

The workshops were led by visiting tutors Gwyn Roberts and Jeff Jarrott.

Gwyn is a principal cellist and was the musical director of the Queensland University Symphony Orchestra, as well as a senior lecturer in the School of Music for 25 years.

He is currently the conductor of the Young Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra.

Jeff is a percussion specialist teacher at five schools in Brisbane and the Percussion Project Officer for the Brisbane metropolitan region.

He is in demand as a workshop presenter, tutor and adjudicator, and also enjoys writing and arranging music.

The workshops, which ran on Saturday and Sunday, provided high quality music tuition at low cost for local musicians.

They were made possible through funding from the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF).

RADF is a State Government and South Burnett Regional Council partnership that aims to support local arts and culture.
