Year 12 student Harrison Lucas, from St Mary’s Catholic College, will represent the Kingaroy Lions Club at the regional finals of the Lions Youth of the Year competition.

Harrison was one of eight students who tested their public speaking skills last Wednesday night at the club judging, held at the Commercial Hotel in Kingaroy.

The competition is divided into two parts – a preliminary judging which involves a 20-minute interview, and a public speaking section which includes a five-minute prepared speech and responses to two impromptu questions.

Harrison scored the most points overall, with classmate Bridget McDonald winning the public speaking section.

The Lions Youth of the Year competition aims to encourage and foster leadership skills and good citizenship.

The Regional judging will be held at the South Burnett Enterprise Centre on March 10.

The winner from this will go on to the State Final, with a chance to compete at the National Final and win a $5000 prize.
