The recipient of the inaugural Dr Ellen Mary Kent Hughes Memorial Scholarship was the special guest at a recent planning meeting held by scholarship organisers, South Burnett Women.

Mikaela Lenihan, from Kingaroy, received the $5000 scholarship last year to assist her with her pharmacy studies at the University of Queensland.

Mikaela is now in her second year at uni and told southburnett.com.au the financial support she had received had been very helpful covering accommodation costs and purchasing text books.

SB Women president Caroline Cavanagh said the group was now starting fundraising for the 2018 bursary.

A breakfast to mark International Women’s Day will be held from 6:30am to 8:30am at Cassis on March 8.

Tickets will be $45 and will go on sale next week on the Eventbrite website (at this link)

Entries also close this week for SB Women’s upcoming art competition being held in conjunction with International Women’s Day.

An exhibition at the Kingaroy Art Gallery will run from March 8 to April 10 to celebrate the talents of female artists living in and around the South Burnett.

The exhibition, entitled ROAR, will showcase new works by local artists responding to the theme: “What It Means To Be A Woman” in regional Queensland.

Entries close on Friday (February 9).

More than $2000 in prize money is on offer to participating artists:

  • South Burnett Regional Council Major Art Award: $1000
  • Peddle Thorp Highly Commended Award: $750
  • Taabinga Station Young or Emerging Artist Award: $350
