A program of exciting, free hands-on activities encouraging children to explore ideas about self and identity will run at the Wondai Regional Art Gallery on February 18, March 18 and April 22.
The “Me, My Selfie and I Kids On Tour” program, from Queensland’s Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), will travel to 90 venues across Queensland and the Torres Strait from January to April, including Wondai and Cherbourg.
QAGOMA Director Chris Saines said the program encouraged children of all ages to explore ideas beyond their physical appearance and to think about how they express their emotions, personality, memories and experiences through images, sound, the spoken word and movement.
“The activities have been developed by QAGOMA in collaboration with Australian and international artists featured in the Gallery’s collection including Angela Tiatia (New Zealand/Australia), Ayaz Jokhio (Pakistan), Wit Pimkanchanapong (Thailand), Miloš Tomic (Serbia) and Phil Dadson (New Zealand),” Mr Saines said.
“This Kids On Tour program coincides with the exhibition ‘Me, My Selfie and I’ at GOMA’s Children’s Art Centre in Brisbane.”
In Wit Pimkanchanapong’s drawing activity, children can work with a sibling or friend to create a composite portrait and discover how our sense of self is shaped by our relationships with other people.
Angela Tiatia likes to explore the way people view each other, and in turn, the way we see ourselves.
Her hands-on activity encourages children to observe the transformation of their face in a series of patterned mirrors that distort their reflection, and to experiment with making an abstract portrait.
Ayaz Jokhio invites children to transform his image, which has been replicated 99 times, with an assortment of outfits from all over the world because he is interested in how clothing can be used to express ourselves and can change how people view us.
Meanwhile, Miloš Tomic is fascinated by the world of sound and music that we all make in our daily lives.
In his multimedia interactive work, children can express their mood and personality through sound.
In addition to the Wondai Regional Art Gallery tour, “Me, My Selfie And I” will visit a record number of regional venues, art galleries, libraries and community art centres, including Barcaldine, Cairns, Cape York, Cherbourg, Cunnamulla, Longreach, Mornington Island, Palm Island and the Scenic Rim.
Kids on Tour is a free program run by QAGOMA’s Regional Services department, and is supported by Gina Fairfax through the Queensland Art Gallery-Gallery of Modern Art Foundation.
This year’s Kids On Tour will be sixth time the Wondai Regional Art Gallery has hosted a QAGOMA travelling exhibition.
