The market for most descriptions was tougher at the Murgon cattle sale on Tuesday, where 600 head were yarded – 25 per cent fewer than a fortnight ago.

Better quality weaner steers still sold to fairly firm values, topping at $3.66/kg. But values for export cattle, feeder types and weaner heifers were all easier.

Cattle were drawn from Mundubbera, Gayndah, Mt Perry, Durong, Yarraman, Nanango, Kingaroy and local areas.

Very few export bullocks were yarded.

  • Heavy Bulls sold to fairly firm rates, topping at $2.56/kg for $2230
  • Cows over 500kg sold to 2.23/kg and $1570
  • Cows 400–500kg were cheaper, selling to $2.10/kg and averaging $1.93/kg
  • Lighter Cows under 400kg sold to $1.60/kg
  • Charolais cross steers from G & F Stumm of Goomeri sold $3.00/kg to return $1417
  • Droughtmaster steers from L. Yesberg of Tansey sold for $1462 ($2.90), $1417 ($2.98) and $1446($2.73)
  • 420kg Santa steers from S & D Hansen of Murgon sold for $1180
  • 305kg Angus cross steers from L & H Grant of Merlwood sold to $979 at $3.05/kg
  • A draft of 64 Droughtmaster steers with an average weight of 318kg on a/c Myora Pastoral, Johnstown sold for $936 at $3.02/kg average
  • 312kg Droughtmaster steers from M. Pethers of Mt McEuen sold to $911 at $2.91/kg
  • 228kg Santa weaner steers from Wheatlands sold for $3.66/kg to return $834
  • Angus cross weaner steers from Yarraman sold for $783 at $3.58/kg
  • 263kg Charolais cross weaner steers from A & R Barsby of Tansey sold for $891 at $3.38/kg
  • Braford cross steers from Stuart Dingle of Mt Perry sold for $3.33/kg for $720
  • Simmental cross weaner steers from Kennedy & Hefferan of Murgon sold at $3.33/kg for $743
  • Light Charbray weaner steers from Gayndah sold to $646 at $3.55/kg
  • A draft of 416kg crossbred heifers from Merlwood Enterprises sold for an average of $2.63/kg for $1095, the tops being Charbray heifers at $2.75/kg and $1114
  • 305kg Angus heifers sold for $2.85/kg, returning $872
  • Charolais weaner heifers from R & O Rankin of Brigooda sold for $670 and $2.85/kg
  • Angus weaner heifers from S. Lavaring, Kingaroy sold for $2.80/kg returning $605
  • Braford cross weaner heifers from the Davies family of Yarraman sold for $681 at $2.75/kg

The next Murgon Fat, Store and Calf Sales will be held at the Murgon Saleyards on Tuesday, August 22.

The Coolabunia Fat and Store sale planned for Tuesday, August 8 was cancelled due to low cattle numbers.

The next Coolabunia sale will be the Charolais Bull Sale on Thursday, August 17. It will be followed by the Fat and Store Sale on Tuesday, August 22.
