The South Burnett Rail Trail between Kingaroy and Murgon moved a step closer to completion this week.
Cr Ros Heit announced on Sunday the Rail Trail is now fully sealed between Kingaroy and Barambah Creek, north of Wondai.
The final section of the trail between the creek and Murgon is expected to be graded and sealed by the end of July.
Cr Heit said she was pleased with progress on the project, which was hit with delays last winter caused by unseasonal rain.
The Swickers fire last November caused a further delay, with Council releasing the sealing contractor from their Rail Trail work for several months so they could assist Swickers’ reconstruction efforts.
However, work resumed on the project a few months ago and has progressed rapidly since.
Cr Heit said some chicanes and signage still need to be installed on the trail, so Rail Trail users should proceed with care until they were in place.
The newly-completed sections will get their first major workout on June 24 at the inaugural Wondai Country Festival.
Walkers and runners participating in the Country Festival’s fun run will test out the section between Wondai and Tingoora, while cyclists will test out the northern section between Wondai and Barambah Creek.
Once sealing work has been completed, the trail will be treated with herbicide to prevent weeds growing through the bitumen, Cr Heit said.
The Rail Trail is expected to be officially opened on the October long weekend.
