The Bees were buzzing, along with riders from as far away as South Australia and NSW, at the second annual John Titman Golden Steel Shoe Challenge held in Kingaroy on Saturday.

The Bees are the members of the Kingaroy Junior Motorcycle Speedway Club.

Club secretary Tracey Tunstall was pleased with the day of racing at Kingaroy Showgrounds.

“It was a great day with some fantastic riding by everyone,” she said.

“John Titman himself was very impressed with the young riders. We were very lucky to have so many spectators come along to see just what it is we do.”

This is great praise as Titman is a former international speedway rider who competed in the tough British speedway circuit for many years as well as being a regular member of the Australian team.

Titman sponsored the trophies for the day: Bronze, Silver and Gold coloured “steel shoe” trophies for the 125cc and 250cc classes.

(Steel slip-on shoes are worn by speedway riders to protect their left feet while racing.)

Local rider Cordell Rogerson did well on the day, winning the 125cc class, coming third in the 250cc class, and taking home $50 for winning the sudden-death one lap dash for cash.

Results:

  • 125cc – 1st Cordell Rogerson, 2nd Fraser Bowes and 3rd Patrick Bowes
  • 250cc – 1st Fraser Bowes, 2nd Jacob Hook, 3rd Cordell Rogerson, 4th Bailey Viner and 5th Bradley Page

The 250cc heats also provided some fast and exciting riding
Oops … as the day drew on the racing became tighter and there were a number of spills, although fortunately no one was hurt … from left, Bradley Page and then Fraser Bowes go down at the same corner in the same 125cc race; and Jacob Hook crashes out in a 250cc race
