About 14,000 Ergon Energy customers in the southern half of the South Burnett lost power when a thunderstorm passed through the region on Monday night.

Power went off at 11:38pm.

An Ergon spokesman said the storm affected a line from the Tarong substation that supplies the Kingaroy substation, causing the network protection system to trip, cutting power to all customers supplied from Kingaroy.

Residents in Kingaroy, Nanango, Yarraman, Blackbutt, Maidenwell and Cooyar were affected.

“Power was restored progressively to customers up to 12:22am,” he said.

“Crews attended the substation to check that no damage requiring repair had occurred, re-set the protection system and then power was successfully restored.”

Footnote: Rainfall from the storm was variable. In Kingaroy, between 4mm and 6mm was reported, with heavier falls at Kumbia (25mm), Yarraman and Blackbutt (24mm). Residents living further north seem to have missed out completely.
