The South Burnett Regional Council will expand its First Start traineeship program to 10 positions in 2017.

Finance Portfolio chair Cr Ros Heit told Wednesday’s Council meeting the 12 month traineeship program, which began with eight recruits this year, has been so successful the Department of Education and Training has agreed to help fund an extra two places.

The Department will contribute $137,500 towards the program on condition next year’s trainees come from one or more of the following disadvantaged groups:

  • Young people (aged 15-24 years)
  • Mature-aged job seekers (45 years or older)
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • People with a disability
  • Migrants and refugees
  • Women re-entering the workforce

Recruitment will begin in January and successful applicants will begin work with the Council in April.

This year, 283 applicants applied for the eight traineeship positions available.

  1. Will be interesting to see which disadvantaged group/groups the successful applicants come from. It appears that this year, they all came from one.
