Towns in the northern half of the South Burnett and parts of Gympie region lost power at 6:48pm on Monday night.

The blackout affected about 12,000 Ergon Energy customers in the South Burnett and between Maryborough and Gympie.

southburnett.com.au received reports of the power being off in Wondai, Murgon, Cherbourg, Cloyna, Durong, Tingoora, Hivesville, Proston, Moffatdale, Redgate, Crownthorpe, Goomeri, Kilkivan and Lower Wonga.

The northern parts of Nanango were also affected.

There were also multiple reports of landline telephones not working.

Power was restored to about 7000 South Burnett customers at 7:46pm after emergency repairs.

Ergon Energy customers closer to Woolooga were reconnected at 8:37pm.

At 10:00pm, only about 270 customers in the Tiaro area were still without power.

The cause of the blackout is not known at present but the fault appears to have occurred on a major feeder line south of Maryborough.

UPDATE September 29: The fault was caused by a failure in high-voltage lines near Bidwill. Power was restored to the final 80-odd customers just before 8:00am.
