ABC Regional is calling for all young regional and rural Australians to share their stories.
The annual Heywire competition, now in its 18th year, was launched today.
Heywire provides an opportunity for Australians aged between 16-22 to submit stories about their life, and issues affecting their community.
Winning stories are featured on the ABC, and each winner will receive a trip to the Heywire Regional Youth Summit in Canberra.
“Heywire puts young regional Australians at the centre of the national conversation,” ABC’s Regional Director Fiona Reynolds said.
“Over the past 18 years we’ve seen that Heywire is a springboard for young people to become leaders in their community and to kick-start youth-led initiatives that have a huge positive impact in their regional towns.”
Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce said initiatives like Heywire gave young country people a voice.
“Since it began in 1998, Heywire has helped over 9000 young Australians tell their story, build their communication and leadership skills, and build important networks,” Mr Joyce said.
“I encourage young people to enter. You can either be part of the solution, or risk not being part of anything. Get into the habit of getting involved.
“I look forward to seeing the next generation of Australia’s leaders contribute to the important discussion about the future of agriculture and related industries during this year’s competition.”
Stories can be entered via the Heywire website before September 16.
