Today (May 26) is National Sorry Day. It marks the the day in 1997 that the “Bringing Them Home” report was tabled in Federal Parliament, acknowledging the ongoing pain of Indigenous people forcibly removed from their families as part of government policy between 1910 and 1970.
Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Curtis Pitt today urged Queenslanders to reflect on the Stolen Generations.
“It’s difficult to fathom that not that long ago in our nation’s history, children were forcibly taken from their mothers for over 60 years,” he said.
“Today we remember the profound grief, suffering and loss on our Stolen Generations, their families and communities.
“We also continue to direct our focus and attention on closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians in health, education, employment and economic opportunity.
“Closing the gap requires a co-ordinated response right across all levels of government and working in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.”
