QantasLink has announced that two extra return flights to Sydney will now leave Brisbane West Wellcamp airport every week.
Airport general manager Phil Gregory said the extra 20 per cent capacity was an indication of QantasLink’s confidence in the region.
“We have received overwhelming support from the community since the first official QantasLink flight out of (Wellcamp) on November 17,” Mr Gregory said.
“That said, locals need to support all of the services into Sydney which in turn will help put us a step closer to securing the direct route to Melbourne that is high on everyone’s priority list.”
He said negotiations were also continuing with QantasLink for other routes.
Mr Gregory said the existing Sydney services into Wellcamp were largely supported by the business travel market but extra services would help support the continued growth of the “visiting friends and relatives” market.
“Locals will now be able to fly to Sydney for a weekend,” he said. “Sydneysiders will also now have the chance to enjoy a weekend in our region.”
QantasLink Chief Executive Officer John Gissing said demand has been strong on the Wellcamp-Sydney route.
“A lot of our customers have been telling us they want additional flights over the weekends. We’ve listened to our customers and have been able to work the schedule to put on these additional flights. We’re very happy with the way the route is performing,” Mr Gissing said.
The new flights are:
- Wellcamp-Sydney, 7:00pm on Fridays
- Sydney-Wellcamp, 6:35am on Saturdays
- Sydney-Wellcamp, 1:05pm on Sundays
- Wellcamp-Sydney, 3:10pm on Sundays
QantasLink has also changed the times of two current flights, based on customer feedback:
- Friday Sydney-Wellcamp will now leave at 4:55pm instead of 5:55pm
- Saturday Wellcamp-Sydney will now depart at 8:35am instead of 7:30am
The new services equate to an extra 296 seats a week, meaning there are now a total of 1924 QantasLink seats to Sydney offered weekly from Wellcamp.
