If you’re thinking of doing a bit of tree-clearing at home this long weekend, Ergon Energy is urging you to think again … and call in a professional.

There were 41 reported incidents last year across regional Queensland of tree trimming that impacted or brought down overhead powerlines.

But Ergon spokesman Peter Billing said anecdotal evidence suggested the real number of incidents and close calls could be much higher.

He said trimming or felling trees near powerlines should be left to the professionals.

“If you are in doubt about the proximity of trees or branches to powerlines, don’t risk it yourself because causing damage to overhead powerlines can be a costly mistake, or even a deadly one,” Mr Billing said.

During 2013-14, there were 13 tree trimming-related incidents recorded in the Wide Bay-Burnett region, the largest number in any Ergon region.
