Energy Minister Mark McArdle

In good news for local school leavers, Energy Energy is pressing ahead with its 2014 intake of apprentices despite a decision earlier this year by fellow government-owned corporation Stanwell to suspend its program for 12 months.

Ergon announced today that it will have 72 apprenticeships on offer at 29 locations across Queensland, including Kingaroy and Murgon.

“We’re committed to training the workforce of tomorrow while balancing stakeholder and customer expectations in what is a challenging and ever-evolving energy landscape,” Ergon Chief Executive Ian Mcleod said today.

The advertised positions cover:

  • Apprentice Electrotechnology Electricians,
  • Apprentice Electrotechnology Electricians with an Associate Degree of Engineering,
  • Communications Technicians with an Advanced Diploma of Industrial Data Communications,
  • Networking and IT,
  • Electrical Distribution Linespersons, and
  • Electrical Transmission Linespersons.

Queensland Energy Minister Mark McArdle said the Ergon Energy apprentice intake was about building skills and encouraging training.

“The diverse positions on offer mean there are a number of opportunities for those who want to advance their career in the challenging sector that is electricity,” Mr McArdle said.

Mr McLeod said the successful applicants would join Ergon Energy as it maintains a keen focus on operating efficiently to deliver a safe, reliable and affordable electricity supply to customers.

“Ergon Energy acknowledges that the cost of its operations is a major factor in rising electricity prices and is taking action to address that.

“Our goal is to limit Ergon’s future increases in the network component of the overall cost of electricity to less than CPI and with the cost savings, efficiency measures and innovative energy solutions already in place we are now on track to deliver this goal from 2015.

It is our hope that through our own cost savings and by working together with our customers we can all get power bills that we can live with. These recruits will become part of our new way of working to achieve that.”
