A Gympie man has been sentenced to four months jail – suspended for two years – after pleading guilty in Gympie Magistrates Court to the illegal slaughter of two Droughtmaster cows near Widgee in March.

Police alleged Matthew Robert Wakefield shot the cattle – including one that was heavily pregnant – with a bow and arrow before butchering the carcasses for meat.

The court also ordered Wakefield perform 200 hours community service and pay $4000 in restitution.

The bow and arrows, a bandsaw and other equipment used in the offence were forfeited to the Crown.
