For the second year in a row, Fritz Kutzer has proven he’s the “best of the wurst”.

Fritz, from Kingaroy Butchery, took home the Grand Champion trophy for his venison-flavoured wurst at the annual Wide Bay Wurst Off on Saturday night.

The Wurst Off, which was held in Murgon this year, is a fundraiser for the Karate Union of Australia.

This is the fourth year that it has been organised.

Four South Burnett butcher shops took part: Top Of The Town Butchery (Murgon), Shoppingworld Butchery (Kingaroy), Kingaroy Butchery, and Ryan’s Butchery (Wondai).

Three judges did a blind tasting of the 17 wursts submitted by the entrants.

Chief judge Jason Ford said the wursts were judged on appearance, aroma, texture and flavour.

There was also a People’s Choice category where people could vote for their favourites.

Category winners:

  • Plain: Kingaroy Butchery
  • Honey: Ryans Butchery
  • Other: Kingaroy Butchery (for venison flavoured)
  • Pepper: Ryans Butchery
  • Garlic: Ryans Butchery
  • Chilli: Ryans Butchery

Grand Champion:

  • Kingaroy Butchery (for venison flavoured)

People’s Choice

  • 1st – Shoppingworld Butchery (for honey flavoured)
  • 2nd (tied) – Kingaroy Butchery (for venison flavoured) and Top of the Town Butchery (for chicken and cheese flavoured)
