South Burnett Mayor Kathy Duff has welcomed a massive $62.3 million State Government injection into infrastructure spending in the South Burnett which could allow several stalled housing projects in the region to proceed.
The funding, announced by Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington on Monday, follows a visit to the region by Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie last Friday.
The MPs joined South Burnett councillors and senior Council staff at the site of the much-discussed Kingaroy North project site on the Bunya Highway, just one of several blocks around Kingaroy which are awaiting development.
Mayor Duff told southburnett.com.au the funding was the largest she had seen from the State Government in her 22 years in Local Government.
She said it would be a massive boost for the region, allowing important trunk water and sewerage networks to be upgraded to cater for more housing.
The investments include:
- $51.3 million for the Kingaroy Trunk Water Upgrade – 8.4km of water mains, pump station upgrades and construction of two new pump stations to support housing growth in Kingaroy
- $11 million for the Kingaroy Trunk Sewer Upgrade – 5.5km sewer gravity mains connecting to the Kingaroy Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The funding has come from Round 2 of the State Government’s Residential Activation Fund.
This scheme aims to remove infrastructure barriers that can delay or prevent housing developments from going ahead.
By investing in essential infrastructure such as water and sewerage, the fund aims to unlock land for housing and accelerate residential growth in regional communities.
Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council will receive almost $4.1 million from the same round to deliver critical water and sewer infrastructure upgrades for new housing.
This will deliver 2.3km of water main, a new sewer pumping station and sewer rising main for the Fisher Street housing project.
Mrs Frecklington said the funding was a major win for the South Burnett and Cherbourg communities.
“This is an incredible outcome for our region and a significant investment in our future,” Mrs Frecklington said.
“You cannot address housing shortages without building more homes, and you cannot build more homes without the water and sewer infrastructure needed to support them.
“Housing supply is one of the biggest challenges facing Queensland communities, and this funding will help ensure our region has the infrastructure needed to support sustainable growth.
“This is exactly the kind of investment regional Queensland deserves, and I’m proud to see the South Burnett and Cherbourg securing their share of this significant funding.
“The Crisafulli Government made a commitment to tackle housing supply challenges, particularly in regional Queensland, and this investment demonstrates we are delivering on that promise.”
