Police are hunting car thieves who trashed at least 10 graves at Cherbourg Cemetery late on Thursday night.

Cherbourg Council CEO Chatur Zala said three stolen vehicles smashed through a fence and then were driven around the cemetery, smashing graves.

One of the stolen vehicles was later found burnt out behind the Cherbourg Council depot, while the other two were left smashed up.

Council staff were out early on Friday morning tidying up the cemetery, ahead of a burial due to take place on Monday.

CEO Zala said Cherbourg Council would pay to have the graves repaired.

“It is very disrespectful to our Elders and Cherbourg culture,” he said.

“It should be a place of peacefulness.”
