Kingaroy’s Red Ants turned pink again last Saturday at T.J. O’Neill Oval for the club’s big annual cancer fundraiser.
There was a series of junior games played from early in the morning, with Kingaroy’s young players turning out in pink socks.
Later, three South Burnett A Grade games were played (see results below) with Kingaroy’s senior players bringing out their special “Pink Ants” strip.
But cancer wasn’t the only thing on the players’ minds …
Before the start of the main game between the Kingaroy Red Ants and the Blackbutt-Yarraman Timbertowners, the players gathered in a circle and knelt in an emotional #TakeAKneeForAckers tribute to the late Sunshine Coast Falcons player, James Ackerman, who died in 2015, two days after suffering a head injury in a tackle during a match against Norths Devils.
And later in the day there was also a minute’s silence for Cherbourg residents Gary Willmot and Tommy Long before the start of the Cherbourg Hornets games against the Murgon Mustangs.
This Saturday, the senior rugby league action moves to Fred Kassulke Oval in Kingaroy for the Stags’ annual Ladies Day:
- 1:30pm – Blackbutt-Yarraman Timbertowners v Cherbourg Hornets
- 3:00pm – Nanango Stags v Murgon Mustangs
- 4:30pm – Kingaroy Red Ants v Wondai- Proston Wolves
