The Federal Coalition has launched a “Rescue our Rail” petition in support of extending the Inland Rail project into Queensland.
The Federal Government announced last week that the much-discussed project would not extend beyond Parkes in NSW.
Nationals leader Matt Canavan said Labor’s decision to scrap the project halfway through was devastating for regional communities and must be overturned.
“The Inland Rail project is a nation-changing project, spanning 1600km from Melbourne to Brisbane and connecting regional areas through Victoria, NSW and Queensland,” Senator Canavan said.
Shadow Infrastructure Minister Senator Bridget McKenzie said Inland Rail was a once-in-a-generation project to get freight off roads.
“The Inland Rail would take 200,000 truck movements off our roads and cut freight sector carbon emissions by 750,000 tonnes per year by 2050,” she said.
