Division 6 councillor Warren McEwan – who represents the Goomeri and Kilkivan districts – has been elected Deputy Mayor of Gympie Regional Council.

He replaces Cr Dolly Jensen who has held the role for the past two years.

Mayor Glen Hartwig said his Council had agreed to utilise a process of electing a Deputy Mayor every year.

“This role has been performed by Cr Dolly Jensen for the last two years. In that time, she has done a great job, representing the region with pride,” Mayor Hartwig said.

Cr Mick Curran nominated Cr Jensen to continue in the role, while Cr Gordon Maudsley nominated Cr McEwan.

Cr McEwan was elected five votes to three to take over as Deputy Mayor.

Mayor Hartwig said the role was an important position whose focus was on supporting the Mayor while serving the community

“Cr Jensen has been very helpful to myself, the organisation and the community. She can be very proud of her achievements and the efforts she made to uphold the position of Deputy Mayor,” he said.

“I would also like to congratulate incoming Deputy Mayor, Cr McEwan.

“His hard work in his division and as a Councillor colleague has gained the trust of the Council Chamber.

“I look forward to working with him over the next 12 months.”
