A major internet outage hit parts of the South and North Burnett areas on Friday morning, with services only restored about 2:00pm.

The widespread outage was caused by an incident at Telstra’s Ipswich exchange about 11:00am.

A Telstra spokesperson said a fibre optic cable that was damaged at the exchange had been fixed, bringing landline and internet services back online.

“Our team on the ground worked to repair the damage as quickly as possible and we thank everyone for their patience,” the spokesperson said.

NBN connections on both the Telstra and Optus networks were affected from at least Blackbutt to Gayndah.

Large sections of Kingaroy were cut off, although not all businesses reported issues.

Communications at both the South Burnett and North Burnett councils were disrupted.

An Optus spokesperson said about 550 Optus NBN customers in the Wide Bay and Burnett region were affected by the damage to NBN infrastructure.

“We understand how disruptive outages can be and apologise to customers who were affected,” the Optus spokesperson said.
