Nationals Leader David Littleproud has congratulated Angus Taylor on taking charge of the Liberal Party after a spill motion and subsequent vote ejected former leader Sussan Ley on Friday morning.
“Angus has the skills, smarts and conviction to lead the Liberal Party and the Coalition to win the next election,” Mr Littleproud said.
“Angus is the leader Australia needs to take up the fight against Labor’s reckless spending and ideology.
“Australia is experiencing a drift in our social cohesion, as well as record levels of immigration and debt, and desperately needs someone who will stand up for our great country.
“Angus can offer hope to aspirant Australians and those who are struggling to enter the housing market.
“I also congratulate new Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party, Senator Jane Hume.
“Together, Angus and Jane will tackle the issues that matter and help build a policy platform that will improve the lives of Australians.
“I also pay tribute and respect to former Liberal Leader Sussan Ley.
“Sussan has shown integrity and class in today’s leadership challenge and I wish her all the best in her future endeavours.”
After losing the vote, Ms Ley – the first woman to lead the Liberal Party – said she would be returning to her seat of Farrer before resigning from Parliament.
This will spark a by-election in the southern NSW electorate.
