Former Somerset councillor Kirsten Moriarty has been identified as the woman found dead inside a vehicle in southern NSW on December 5.

Ms Moriarty, 48, served on the Somerset Regional Council from 2012 to 2016.

Her body was found inside a Toyota Yaris sedan parked outside the Lake Illawarra police station at Oak Flats, south of Port Kembla.

It is unknown how long she had been in the vehicle but she is believed to have entered the police station to make a report three days earlier.

The former Toogoolawah resident worked for the SRC before being elected as a councillor.

She stood for mayor at the 2016 poll, securing 30.92 per cent of the vote but not enough to unseat incumbent Graeme Lehmann.

It is believed she may have been staying with family members at Kiama at the time of her death.
