Aunty Kathleen Hopkins and Aunty Ada Simpson were catching up with old friends at Golden Oldies

October 29, 2025

Upgrades to the Cherbourg Community Hall meant this year’s Golden Oldies shifted up the hill to a new venue for last Saturday’s celebration.

However, the hall in the Les Stewart Snr Sports Complex proved to be the perfect venue, especially on a hot day.

With the sides of the building open, a breeze flowed through, and there was plenty of room for the elegantly decorated tables.

The annual reunion of “over 60s” attracts former Cherbourg residents back to town from across Queensland (and this year, NSW).

Younger Cherbourg residents were making sure their Elders were being well-fed and looked after.

Other highlights included line-dancing by Cherbourg State School children, a performance by the Wakka Wakka Dancers, sing-alongs and even some dancing.

Golden Oldies is always an opportunity for lots of catch-ups and laughter, but there is also sadness as Elders who have died during the past 12 months are remembered.

A Golden Oldie stalwart from past years was a noticeable absence this year; Nan Eva Collins died at age 102 in September.

  1. Thank you. The Cherbourg community appreciates your coverage of our events over so many years. Bless you! It was a fantastic day, despite the hot conditions on the day.
