Division 5 councillor Heath Sander has been elected to lead the Murgon Business and Development Association

October 27, 2025

Councillor Heath Sander was elected president of the Murgon Business and Development Association at the group’s annual general meeting last Thursday night.

Cr Sander, who recently took over as licensee of the Royal Hotel, manages the recreation facilities at Boondooma and Bjelke-Petersen Dams with his wife Rowena and also runs a local excavator business.

He is taking over from Amy Wicks who served two terms in the role.

Ms Wicks announced earlier this year that she wanted to step down to devote more time to her business and family responsibilities.

“As I reflect on the past 12 months … I am proud of the progress we’ve continued to make together,” Ms Wicks said in her president’s report.

“This has been another year of connection, collaboration, and commitment to supporting local business and strengthening our wonderful community.

“One of our highlights this year has been the continued success of our Meet and Greet sessions, providing opportunities for local business owners to connect, share ideas, and work together to address common challenges.

“These informal gatherings have helped build stronger relationships and a greater sense of unity among our members.

“We again celebrated the festive season with a wonderful Christmas break-up, and our regular support for community events has reinforced the MBDA’s role as an active, visible, and supportive organisation within the community.

“Throughout the year, the Association has stayed true to its objectives of promoting local trade, commerce, and industry in Murgon and the surrounding district. We have continued to encourage
development in our region by exploring opportunities, collaborating with local and regional organisations, and maintaining open communication with Council and community groups.”

Two people nominated for the role of vice-president: Allan Walters and Stella Miller.

Ms Miller was elected by secret ballot, with the votes counted by non-members.

Other roles were elected uncontested:  Lorraine Goodchild (treasurer), Sharon Elkins (secretary) and Shane Sippel, Joy Fennell,  Lanse Rea and  John Robinson (management committee members).
