Eighteen teams turned out on a crisp Kingaroy morning last weekend to take part in the fifth running of the South Burnett Express Rail Trail Relay.

Teams started at three staggered times from about 6:00am on Sunday.

Runners in teams of between five and eight participants had to conquer a section of the 60km course from Kingaroy to Wondai and return.

The race is run as a relay, with each team having one runner on the course at the same time.

This year five South Burnett teams took part, including a team of police officers.

Two South Burnett teams took home medals: Pinnacle Women came in first in their category, while Pinnacle Mixed came third and took line honours as the first team home.

After the race, the runners enjoyed a sausage sizzle in O’Neill Square organised by volunteers from the South Burnett Mountain Bike Club.

Race director John Purcell said the weather had been perfect for running, with a bit of cloud cover.

And he also praised the South Burnett Rail Trail, saying it was almost “purpose-built” for events such as the Relay.

The relay is an official Queensland Athletics event and is organised by the Ashgrove Rangers Athletics Club from Brisbane.
