An era is about to end with the upcoming retirement of Joy Woods at Kingaroy Chiropractic & Wellness.
Joy, who will turn 78 next month, has been the welcoming face which has greeted generations of South Burnett residents seeking chiropractic care in Kingaroy.
Joy began working for then-local chiropractor David Hodal in 1988.
The business was located in the Glendon Street Arcade (the small arcade which formerly linked Glendon and Alford streets behind what is now Prices Plus).
“I was just a patient and David asked me to fill in for a few weeks until another worker came back,” Joy said.
That “few weeks” stretched into decades.
In 1991, David moved the clinic to an old Queenslander located at 221 Haly Street.
Joy followed along …
In 1996, Chris and Jane Barham took over the practice, and Joy continued behind the desk.
Then in 2020, Scott Young bought it out … and Joy still remained!
Joy is now finally calling it quits, after almost 38 years welcoming and helping patients.
However, her “real work” will be continuing.
Joy and her partner have a cattle and cropping property at Cushnie; and – as every farmer knows – the work never stops when you’re on the land.
“I always said I came in her to have a rest!” Joy said last week.
She’s been working fewer hours over the past nine months, gradually preparing for full-time requirement.
The thing that Joy admits that she’s going to miss the most are the patients.
“Some patients I remembers from when I first started,” she said.
“Some say they remember coming in with their parents … now they bring in their own kids. That’s three generations of the one family.
“I’ve seen them growing up.”
