A 71-year-old Murgon woman died – and a 78-year Murgon man suffered critical injuries – when a vehicle ran off the highway and hit a tree near Goomeri on Thursday afternoon.

Emergency  services were called to the single-vehicle crash on the Wide Bay Highway, between Grant Road and Boonara Street, about 1:40pm.

Paramedics initially treated two people at the scene, including one person trapped inside the vehicle.

Two fire and rescue crews were called to the incident.

They removed the two rear doors of the vehicle with cutting equipment to free the occupants.

A QAS spokesperson said a rescue helicopter airlifted the man to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital with significant arm, leg, neck and chest injuries.

A police spokesperson said the man, who was driving the vehicle, remains in a serious condition.

Investigations are continuing. 

Anyone with information or relevant dashcam footage has been urged to contact police.

Two people were taken to Kingaroy Hospital in a stable condition after a motorbike and a vehicle collided on the Bunya Highway at Crawford on Thursday afternoon.

Emergency services were called about 3:40pm.
