Well-known Kingaroy paper tole expert Rosemarie Matthews-Frederick has taken over the main space at Kingaroy Art Gallery this month to highlight her creations.

Paper tole is a delicate craft which takes many hours to create 3D images.

Rosemarie told the crowd on opening night last Friday that said she had been doing the craft since 1990 when she took it up after a ski-ing accident.

Soon afterwards, she began teaching paper tole … which she has been doing in the South Burnett for the past 18 years.

Works by several of Rosemarie’s students are also on display in Kingaroy’s main gallery.

The March exhibition also includes a number of works from the gallery’s collection by the late David Bryce.

The display of some of his best-known works was to launch next year’s David Bryce Rural Art Award, a major art competition held every two years at the Kingaroy Gallery.

Bryce was one of Kingaroy’s best-known and best-loved artists who died in 2000.

The award, which aims to capture the essence of contemporary rural life, was born out of a retrospective of his work in 2016.

Cr Danita Potter, who officially opened the exhibitions, said Bryce was an amazing person.

As well as being an artist who inspired so many people, he was also a conservationist who loved the land.

“He had a passion for Indigenous people, he had a passion for the community. He was an inspiration to everyone who met him,” Cr Potter said.
