A pool party to attract children – and their parents – will be the first initiative of a new community group set up to raise awareness of juvenile crime in the Wondai area.
A second meeting of residents, organised via the Facebook group “Wondai Crime Chats”, was held at the Wondai Diggers Club on Saturday afternoon.
The turnout was much smaller than the first meeting of the group on January 18.
Organiser Cill Lorne said this was probably due to the fact there had not been as many incidents in the town recently.
Mayor Kathy Duff, Cr Heath Sander and Cr Ros Heit were in attendance as well as about a dozen other people.
Mayor Duff said she had investigated the concept of a Byte Nite – similar to what is held in Murgon – but she did not think it would work in Wondai.
Another suggestion was a possible Blue Light Disco, either at the Lions Pavilion or the Diggers Club.
However, Mayor Duff said the local children should be surveyed to see what they actually wanted.
A small sub-committee volunteered to organise a Pool Party with possible in-kind assistance from South Burnett CTC.
This would provide an opportunity for the children and their parents to be surveyed.
Cr Heit suggested the name of the Facebook group be changed to something positive, such as “Keeping Wondai Safe”, to change the emphasis from “crime”.
She also suggested more information be provided to residents about the importance of locking doors as well as installing security screens and sensor lights.
Later that afternoon, the Facebook group admins set up an online poll, with 77 per cent of respondents (102 votes) rejecting any name change.
No date has been set for the pool party.
