A Bill introduced into State Parliament on Thursday will solve the payroll tax quandary faced by many GPs in Queensland.

In 2022, a tribunal decision in NSW determined that GPs contracted to medical centres were deemed to be receiving “taxable wages” for the purposes of levying payroll tax.

The Queensland Revenue Office then stated the position was the same in Queensland.

At the time, Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington said the ruling had “reinterpreted” the law and feared it could mean the end of bulk-billing by GPs in Queensland.

The Revenue Legislation Amendment Bill 2024 introduced into State Parliament this week means GPs will no longer to be subject to payroll tax or the mental health levy.

It also contains a bonus for first home buyers in Queensland.

The Bill abolishes stamp duty on new builds and land for eligible first-home buyers.

A government spokesperson said a first home buyer buying a new house and land package in Toowoomba at the median price could save $24,730; in Brisbane north, this would equate to a saving of almost $37,000; while in Moreton Bay south, it would save $24,325.
