Firefighters outside the gutted building on Monday evening

October 21, 2024

Fire crews faced a massive task when an apparently unoccupied building in Murgon erupted into flames on Monday evening.

The blaze was initially too intense for firefighters to enter the building.

Instead, they were forced to fight the flames externally, training their hoses on the building to stop the fire from spreading.

Once they had gained control, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the building to do a primary and secondary sweep, to check for occupants and identify any remaining hot spots.

Fortunately, no one was located inside.

Emergency services were called to the blaze, on the corner of Watt and Stephens streets, about 4:55pm.

Urban brigades from Murgon, Cherbourg, Wondai and Goomeri attended.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but firefighters were told a girl had been seen leaving the building before they arrived, apparently trying to get water to extinguish a fire.

Police and ambulance paramedics also attended the incident.
